Until My Last Breath (Trouble In Paradise Book 4)
The day had been long and exhausting. Caroline sat in her office chair, legs crossed, bouncing her pointy toe heels. The back and forth flights from Chicago to Atlanta were making her exhausted. She’d done this so frequently that she now had enough frequent flyer miles to use to catch flights without using her credit card on file. In her thoughts Caroline pondered on Greg and the interesting morning they had. She wondered if he was serious about the things he said. A girl could hope, right? A part of her told her he was full of it and just telling her what she wanted to hear so he could get Victoria out of there safe and sound, but that would never happen. Even if he was serious, she would never let Victoria live where there was a chance she could come around and snatch him away again. Caroline had made that mistake on more than one occasion. She wouldn’t make it again.
Since being out of the psych ward she’d pick up a few bad habits. One being the pack of cigarettes in the inside pocket of her Vera Wang handbag. She tried not to smoke unless she was done with business. Nobody wanted to be around a walking ashtray all day, and she’d known from personal experience how unpleasant it was to sit next to someone who’d just taken a cigarette break.
Her phone buzzed and her assistant came through. “Mrs. Banks, you have a visitor.”
Caroline straightened up and stood to her feet. She checked her schedule to make sure she didn’t forget a client, but there weren’t any other appointments. She buzzed her assistant back.
“Pick up,” she said through the loud speaker. Caroline held the receiver to her mouth, “Who is it?” she said.
“He said his name is Mr. Faragosse,” she said.
Caroline froze. “First name, please,” she responded.
“Brandon,” her assistant replied.
Caroline dropped down into her seat. She hadn’t heard from Brandon Faragosse in a year, she wondered what he was doing here now.
“Send him in,” she said.
She quickly removed the mirror from her second drawer and checked her reflection. Confident that her look was on point, she replaced it no sooner than the mahogany double doors to her office opened, and in walked a sexy specimen of a man. Six foot two inches of dark skin, low fade, full beard, moist full lips, and dark brown eyes. Caroline crossed her legs letting her eyes roam the full length of him.
“To what do I owe this pleasure?” she asked.
He smiled. “The pleasure is all mine,” he responded. “I’ve been thinking about you.”
Caroline’s eyebrows lifted. “Is that so?” She watched his eyes assess her, moving from her curls to her lips, neck, and down her blouse. “Why don’t you have a seat,” she said.
“Don’t mind if I do.” He sat down and relaxed in his chair.
“So what can I do for you?”
“I’m glad you asked.” He paused. “I thought maybe we could get to know each other again. I miss talking to you, and more than anything I miss our midday office flings.”
Caroline grinned and shook her head up and down. “Yes, those were some good times, but you know I was a woman on a mission then. I needed you, and you wanted me, so we we’re looking out for each other,” she said.
He tipped his head forward in agreement, “I think we still could be of service to each other.”
“I have a problem with an inmate who needs to get an early release. In order for that to happen she’ll need to have a professional on the stand tell the jury that she’s been evaluated and holds no threat to society. I figured since we’ve done this before you’d be willing to do it again.”
Caroline held the smile on her face. She stood and rounded the desk, once in front of him she perched her booty on the front of it and crossed her legs at the ankles. This man had lost his mind. He seemed so sure of himself too. It was too bad.
“That was a one time deal,” she said.
He also stood, coming face to face with her. He smelled of peppermint and oozed masculinity. Caroline was very aware of his closeness and was not naïve to his hypnotic lure. “I understand that, but it doesn’t need to be,” he said. “Besides, I have something you want.” He grabbed her arms and ran his hands down them to her wrists turning her full circle pulling her backside into his center.
Charmed, Caroline said, “Proceed.” She couldn’t imagine what he could possibly have that she would want, well she could think of a thing or too. A rumble wouldn’t be so bad. She could definitely use the tryst but it wouldn’t be enough to put her neck on the line.
“Let’s just say I’ll make sure,” his lips touched her neck, his tongue tracing up to her ears, “no one ever finds out about those two women you have chained up in your basement.” Chills ran throughout her whole being. She jerked away instantly almost falling over her own two feet trying to get away from him. “You know,” he said, “you can get Alexis to do it, she’s got the credentials too. It shouldn’t be too hard since you’ve got her wrapped around your little fingers.”
Caroline was completely disturbed. “You can’t be serious. Blackmail, that’s what you’ve got?”
Brandon tipped his head in agreement. “We don’t have to call it blackmail, we can just call it a business deal. After all, blackmail is when you’re threatening someone. I wouldn’t threaten you, Caroline, because I know I don’t need to. You’re a good friend and I know you would want what’s best for the both of us. Moreover, I’d be willing to be of some assistance if you needed me. Now that doesn’t sound like blackmail, does it?”
“What is in it for you? Is this person another one of your bed bugs?”
Brandon laughed. “I would be offended, but you are so cute when you’re feisty.” He went to her and caressed her face. She jerked away. He put his arms around her waist and pulled her in hard, holding on to her tight. Their feet did a dance, backing up until he was pressing her against her windowsill. “I’ve always enjoyed this view from your office,” he said. “It’s nice to see it again. You should really appreciate it more often.”
“Why are you doing this?” she asked. “What have I ever done to you?”
“Oh, come on now, is what I’m doing really so bad? I mean when you wanted to be rid of Victoria, did you not hire me to do the same thing I’m asking you to do. Put your neck on the line. Did I not get rid of the evidence you needed so that Danielle’s charges could be dropped and she be released to wreak havoc on Victoria’s life? I did all you asked honey, and I didn’t bat an eye about it, did I?”
“I also paid you, not blackmailed you,” she said.
“Would you rather have payment? I’d be more than happy to pay you.”
“You know I don’t need the money,” she growled. He kissed her lips and she tried to bite him.
He laughed. “Woo hoo, feisty!” he said. “I figured you would say you didn’t need the money. Besides, you only paid me five thousand dollars. That wasn’t nearly enough for what I did.”
“Oh, please, you got your fill of her, didn’t you?” He raised an eyebrow, “Oh what, you thought I didn’t know? Please. Every chance you got you were rolling in the sack with her, and I was giving you more than money anyway. Don’t act like you didn’t like it,” she said.
“On the contrary, I did like it, as a matter of fact I loved it. Tell you what, just name your price. Do you want money? Or do you want me?” He licked his tongue out, tasting her lips.
His breath warm, sending chills across her skin. Although he was blackmailing her, he was still a force to be reckoned with. When they’d had their affair it was the most exhilarated she’d ever felt before, except of course, with Greg. She thought about his proposition. She didn’t really have a choice.
“And if I say no?” she tried him.
He pulled back slightly to study her face. “Come on now, don’t make me beg,” he said. He resumed kissing her neck moving to her shoulders. Slowly he unbutton her blouse. He kissed down her neckline to her breast. He drop to one knee and unzipped the back of her skirt. She grabbed his hands his gaze piercing through her. “Don’t stop me, you know you want this.”
Lord help her, she did want it, but she couldn’t let him know that. Not just yet anyway. She stepped away from him. “How do you know about the two women in the basement anyway?”
“Are we back to square one?” He asked standing back to his feet.
“I never asked you,” she said.
“I didn’t think you needed to. Come on you know I’m good at what I do. I watch people, that’s how I’m able to be where I need to be when I need to be there. That’s how I’m able to make moves and get what I want.” He was back in her face now, “That’s how I know about the two women in your basement, that’s how I know about Alexis Patrice, that’s how I know that you’ve got two men in your attic. I see, I watched, and I know,” he whispered into her ear. “You know, I can’t believe you’re still after him. After all this time you’d think you’d be tired of the chase by now. I mean, either he loves you or not—
She slapped him hard. “Don’t pretend to act like you know what’s going on in my life.” She sneered. He’d hit a nerve and she wasn’t having it.
He put his hands up in surrender. “I didn’t come here to fight with you. Nowhere near it. I just came to get your help and maybe give you something in return.”
He stepped back in her face. “I will never understand how any man could turn his back on a beautiful, educated, successful woman as yourself. The man must be blind, crazy and confused.”
“Didn’t you get enough of me the first time?” she said.
“Never. Anyway, you were done with me before I was done with you, so I’ve got some built up frustration.” She stood with her back to him. He turned her around. “Listen, I need this done next week. Thursday to be exact.”
“Thursday!” she said. “That is too soon, I have appointments, clients,” she said.
“I know. I wish I could’ve had the chance to get to you sooner, but it’s okay. You can stand to cancel an appointment or two. I’ll be calling you Monday, but if you need me sooner,” he pulled out a business card and placed it on her desk, “you know how to contact me.”
Brandon grabbed her throat forcefully and shoved his tongue in her mouth. She fell off balance and he made sure to tighten his hold on her. Finishing her off, he sucked her lips in his mouth. He backed up, winked, and strolled out of the office.
Caroline didn’t know whether to be mad, horny, or irritated. She was starting to think it was a combination of all three.

Vengeful Intentions (Trouble In Paradise book 2)
Victoria opened her gold case and looked at the row of joints, she pulled one out and snapped the case closed. Reaching for the lighter on the dining room table she lit the end of it. Her feet shuffled back and forth in a pace, her mind in a state of hysteria. The clock on the wall ticked by slowly how many minutes had passed? She hit the joint again and walk to the bathroom door willing it to open but it didn’t. A sigh escaped her lips, puffing the joint again gave her a small sense of relief. Inhaling deeply her nostrils flared as she exhaled through them.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“Calm down Victoria, breathe this could be just a mistake we’ll give it about 30 more seconds then have another look.”
She shook her head agreeing with herself. The joint went out she held the lighter up and lit the joint again then put it out, marched to the bathroom door and opened it. Standing over the e.p.t. pregnancy test a shiver ran down her spine. The window revealed a dark pink plus sign there was no way to deny this truth.
“No, this cannot be.”
She backed up until she hit the wall, this was the second e.p.t. pregnancy test she had taken. An overwhelming since of dread came over her at the fact that the father was a toss-up between Joshua and Greg. Her eyes shut and gravity took over. Victoria slid down the wall until her butt hit the floor.
“This is a cruel joke,” she said.
Remembering the last time she saw Greg, they met at the Doubletree Hotel in Chicago and Victoria was so mad at him she fought, cursed, spit out venom, and tried to shatter his pride. But he knew she was upset and her words didn’t faze him. Once she got within his grasp he grabbed her and held on tight. She tried fighting him off but he just held her. Greg explained over and over that his intention was to tell his wife he wanted a divorce. Falling in love with her wasn’t something that was planned. He explained how everything happened just like life happens. It was all a misunderstanding.
“So you didn’t know I was your wife’s intern?” She asked.
“Not at first,” he said “When I first saw you in the barbeque joint it was completely innocent.”
“Ok what about when you saw me on my lunch break at the lounge?” she asked.
“I didn’t know then either” he said, “but I wanted to get to know you since that was the second time I ran into you. When I found out you worked in my company and was hired by . . .” he hesitated.
“Go on your wife,” she stated looking at him with anger in her eyes. “Once you found out you decided to say nothing because you are a fucked up individual and the truth is not in you!”
She slapped him across his face a couple of times before shoving him away and walking to the door.
“This was a mistake,” she said “I should’ve never come here!”
Greg grabbed Victoria, turning her around he shoved his tongue down her throat kissing her with an intense fever that ignited their passion right where they stood. Victoria started to protest and he deepened the kiss, she melted like hot butter into his arms. He could feel her resistance weaken. His grip dug into her soft flesh embracing her deeper, she moaned wrapping her arms around him and kissed him back.
She stuck her tongue into his mouth and tasted the spearmint gum he was chewing on. Greg kissed her so intensely and deeply she felt like they were one person. He made her head spin and Victoria felt dizzy with rapture. If this was the fight left in her she might as well wave the white flag because she lost. As soon as the man put his hands on her she was finished. Only when he pulled back for air did she become more resistant but he apologized and explained the day away.
Before they departed they had the best sexual lovemaking experience since the day they were caught by his wife Caroline eight months ago. Victoria tried to shake the images that formed in her mind of him taking his shirt off and coming out of his white pants. He was brown and sexy from the tip of his nose to the souls of his feet. As he stood over Victoria like Hercules her eyes traveled to his broad shoulders. Mesmerized by his firm, smooth and sexy chest she wanted to fall back into his bed and let him gallop her. As her eyes met his chiseled abs, she heard a small growl and knew it was going down. Victoria was no longer in control of the madness felt towards him. She wanted him to ravish her and he did.
Victoria shook her head trying to shake the images away but instead the pictures just changed up a bit. When her eyes opened Greg’s eyes were looking back. He started to kiss down her neck to her chest. He circled his tongue around her round brown nipples and sucked them into his mouth. Victoria shuttered at the memory. She had to get up off the bathroom floor and get her mind together but she was paralyzed. The images in her head of their love making were too strong. They were in each other’s arms all night and she loved every minute of it. The ringing of the phone brought Victoria back to reality and she stood up to go answer it.
“Hello?” she said.
“Hey sexy what are you up to?” Joshua asked.
Victoria swallowed she couldn’t tell him what she was really up to—stressing over the plus sign on a pregnancy test oh and by the way the baby might not be yours she thought but she said, “Nothing just flipping through the channels trying to find something to watch.”
“Umm baby why don’t you turn the TV off, I want to talk to you about something when I get there,” he said.
Victoria heard the nervousness in his voice and it made her stomach turn, or did something else make her stomach turn? Either way she didn’t like it one bit.
“What’s wrong Joshua?” she asked, fear creeping into her for what he could say next. No bad news she thought I can’t take anymore today.
“Um baby just turn off the TV and wait til’ I get there. I’ll be there in five.”
He hung up. She looked at the phone like it was a rattle snake.
“What in the world could this be about now?” she said out loud. “Why does he want me to keep the TV off so bad? I wasn’t really looking but now I’m wondering what the hell this is about.”
Victoria picked up the remote and started to turn on the TV then stopped thinking about her therapy sessions. The irony of a shrink needing a shrink but this was different she reasoned. But it really wasn’t, this was relationship therapy, her relationship needed help because it was about two seconds away from not being one. Her therapist came to the conclusion that she had a tendency to do the exact opposite of what Joshua would ask her to do without realizing it. Just like then, he told her not to turn on the TV he wanted to talk to her first; but her first instinct was to do exactly the opposite. A frown came to her face realizing she caught it this time. Wow progress, so we really do have a problem with something or another.
Victoria and Joshua’s relationship was better within the eight months since the big move from Chicago to Atlanta. The change of scenery was greatly needed and she really believed it helped their relationship grow stronger. Only one thing really still hung in the balance and it was Gregory Banks. He would not go away, no matter how much she tried to put him out of her mind it was hard to do so with him constantly calling her.
Changing her number didn’t mean anything to him because he would have it within minutes. He was in love with her and she was in love with him but she was trying to get over it. He wasn’t making it very easy for her. The last time she saw him they couldn’t keep their hands off each other and she didn’t know what to do about it.
Brandon Lamone pulled into the Hertz Rent-A-Car parking lot. Danielle leaned over and kissed him.
“I’ll see you later.”
She opened the car door and stepped out. The doorbell chimed when she walked through the door. The thin tall guy at the desk had a name tag on that said Steve Wilshire.
“Hi, I’m here to pick up a rental that’s been reserved for Shumaker.”
Danielle pulled out her license and handed it to Steve. He looked at it and ran her name through their database.
“Danielle?” he asked.
“Yes.” He retrieved the keys to the BMW 328i Sedan.
“Would you like to do an inspection?” he asked. “There’s not a scratch on her we just got her in.”
She reached for the keys. “That won’t be necessary. Thank you.” She turned and headed towards the door.
“Um, Ms Shumaker!” Danielle turned towards Steve. “Your license, you’ll need these.” He handed it back to her.
The BMW purred to life and almost gave Danielle an orgasm. “Damn,” she said.
Danielle was on a mission to find out as much information on Joshua’s whereabouts. It was easy to get a number, but finding the rest of the information wouldn’t be so simple. She headed to the public library where all of the resources needed would be available to her. Oh how surprised Victoria would be when she came face to face with her. Danielle squealed just thinking about it and it made her nipples hard. The excitement was magnifying. Danielle laughed out loud, “Hahaha! I’m going to find you.”
She couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. Here Danielle faced a murder charge and now was scot free. Why wouldn’t her smile be satisfying? I out smarted them all—the lawyers, the judge, and the correctional officers. At one point Danielle thought she was done for, the D.A. tried to convince her to plead guilty and take a lesser charge or they would hang her during the trial. They brought her into that interrogation room day after day, handcuffed and shackled but she stayed strong and managed to put a plan into motion that worked like taking candy from a baby.
Men were so predictable. Throw a little pussy their way and have them eating out the palm of your hands. Still laughing she beat the steering wheel like it was a drum. She was very proud of herself. Pulling into the parking garage of the library Danielle found a spot and got out. Headed toward the elevator her feet stopped short. Her body turned around slowly as if a presence was near. Her eyes roamed the area settling on any shadows; she didn’t like the feeling but there was no one there. Danielle did a complete three sixty and didn’t see anyone so she proceeded. Adjusting the purse on her shoulder her finger hit the up button on the elevator. Someone coughed. Danielle looked up and felt the cold steel of an object smacking her against the back of her head. She fell into the elevator door and passed out.
Sheila let the crowbar drop as it clang to the ground sending an echo throughout the garage. She grabbed Danielle by her ankles and drug her to the side of the elevator just as the doors opened and two women stepped off walking in the opposite direction. The doors closed and Sheila waited until she could no longer hear the women’s voices. Bending over she drug Danielle to the trunk of the BMW, put her in, and closed the trunk. Sheila looked around carefully to see if anyone spotted her; she couldn’t leave any witnesses for what was about to go down. After running back to get the crowbar she jumped into the BMW and pulled out of the parking garage of the library. Sheila had a controlled determined demeanor.
She turned on West Congress Parkway and drove for a few minutes before pulling up in front of the city morgue. Sheila pulled around to the back and parked on the side of the building. Jumping out and running to a white van sitting in the alley she handed the guy inside ten one hundred dollar bills. He got out of the truck and opened the back doors. He pulled out a gurney and helped her lay Danielle on it face up. They covered her with a white sheet and pushed her to the back door of the building.
“Why does she still have her clothes on? He pulled the door open.
“We’ll take them off once we’re inside,” she said.
“Where did you get the body?”
“Now I don’t see why that’s any of your business.”
“Never mind,” he said pushing the gurney into the building.
They walked down a long narrow hallway and into a freezer room with more gurneys and freezer boxes. Danielle pulled out a syringe and a small bottle.
“This should keep you sleep,” she whispered.
She stuck the syringe into the cap of the bottle filling it halfway.
“What is that?” the guy asked. Sheila looked at him, “Why are you so interested?”
She was told this guy was the type of guy that didn’t speak unless spoken too. He was paid but still asking questions. Sheila wondered for a moment if this was a bad idea. Thinking of Leon pissed her off all over again. Sheila stuck the syringe into Danielle’s ankle and looked at the guy. He couldn’t be trusted.
“Great,” she murmured.
A slight uneasy look was on his face as if the guy was about to throw up. Who would recommend him?
“Help me slide her in,” Sheila said.
She reached for the door to a freezer box and opened it, after removing Danielle’s clothes they slid out the metal plank and lifted Danielle onto it. She pushed her in and closed the door. The concerned look on the guys face let Shelia know he would not be able to keep this secret. This was not good. “Let’s go,” Sheila said. They walked back down the hallway and out the back door. “I’ll help you put this gurney back into the van.”
They opened up the door and lifted the gurney into the van. While his back was turned strapping the gurney down; Sheila took out her silencer and put two bullets in his back. He grunted, toppled over, and didn’t move. She pushed him into the back of the van and closed the doors. As the wind slapped her across the face she looked at her surroundings and walked down the alley onto the sidewalk. She made a left and walked until flagging down a taxi.
“Taxi!” she yelled throwing her hand up. The driver stopped and Sheila got in. “Take me to the library please.”
