It’s New Years Eve and my short story Wreckless is available on Amazon, Nook, Kobo, and Smashwords. Grab your ebook device and get your copy! Writing a short story was no easy task for me. Let’s face it, the challenge is to compile a 60,000 word novel in a 10.000 word story. That’s HUGE! It must come with everything and I’m proud to say this story definitely does. After going through a series of editing and test reading this story has been shaped into the baby I wanted it to be. Yes, it was just as hectic at times to get it right but it was well worth the fight!

Wreckless dives into the life of a love sick fanatic, Jasmine Johnson. She is completely mesmerized by a college cutie Maurice Desmon Jones. He on the other hand has no clue. Jasmine never actually approaches Maurice but when she sees the opportunity someone steps on her toes and gets to him before she can. Oh that is more than Jasmine can handle. She goes into a jealous rage and acts on her emotions. That puts her in a deep situation that will have major consequences. Jasmine tries to fix her problems but she only ends up causing more. This story has everything, drama, revenge, murder, suspense, thrills, pain, misery and inspiration.

There’s nothing left to do now but feed your need to read! Hop on over to one of these retailers and grab your copy. Leave an awesome review when your done I’d appreciate that. It is so wonderful to have you with us today Vanessa, we are excited about this interview. You have achieved many wonderful things in your literary career, the most important being giving back the gift God gave to you. Well done, you are an inspiration to me and other authors who strive daily to do the same. We have some questions to ask you, so let’s dig right in madam!

1.   What made you choose to write in the Genre that you write in?

I write what feels most authentic for me and that happens to be fiction with some Christian characters. I’d say that I didn’t really choose the genre as it actually chose me.

2.  What is your favorite thing about the writing experience and why?

I love to create something out of nothing. Taking words to create people, places, things, activities, etc. is an awesome way to journey. I especially enjoy watching my characters unfold right before my eyes and cause even me to say, “No he/she didn’t!”

3.   What was the first moment you knew you wanted to write?

I loved writing in elementary school. I wrote plays back then. In the sixth grade, I wrote, directed, and produced a play for my class. After that, I would write church plays. I loved to read and I recall after reading Ernest Gaines’ novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman saying to myself, “I would love to write like this!” I think that reading a good book inspires a true writer to want to write and to write well. And reading a bad book inspires a true writer to say “I’m sure I can do better than this” and proceed to work at doing it.

4.   When you write, do you write for a long period of time or do you write in short burst?

When I write, I prefer not to have to stop if I can help it. Yes, I will shut down to sleep and eat, but I try not to even travel during that time. When the flow is going, I don’t like to find myself not being able to keep going as the plot or characters are on a roll. It’s like watching a good show on TV and not wanting the phone to ring, causing you to miss anything or even have to press pause (even if you have that capability).

5.  Where did your inspiration for this book come from?

The Other Side of Divine is the last installment of The Blessed Trinity Series. There were characters with a lot of drama that needed to be addressed such as Gabrielle Mercedes who had fought so hard to become the mother of Jasmine Noble. Paris Simmons-Holyfield finds herself in a mess as does her one-time, co-worker Darius. There are lots of surprises in this novel. I love the response I’ve received from it from the readers, which now also includes an RT Book Reviews 2013 nomination for Best Multicultural Fiction (winners to be announced May 2014).

6.   What words of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

If you’re thin-skinned then this might not be the business for you. There are plenty of places for rejection starting from agents to publishers to reviewers and critics to the readers themselves. You need to be true to you and not try to be a copy of anyone else. Learn the craft of writing (which includes spelling, grammar, and the art of writing, using correct techniques) so that you can be on the top of your game. Then be determined to always get better.

7.  What is your favorite character in your book and why?

In The Other Side of Divine, if I had to choose, I would say Miss Esther Crowe. She played a pivotal role throughout this novel. She’s a special kind of person, someone who shows how one person can make a difference in the lives of many.

8.   What is the best book you have ever read?

The Greatest Miracle in the World by Og Mandino

9.   What is your favorite song?

Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. I love the words and the meaning behind this song. It speaks about life and how the pen is in my hand. It’s not about writing a book, but about writing your life and the future that awaits you.

10.   What is your favorite musical artist?

Since I was a teenager, I have loved Earth, Wind, & Fire. I love their older works more than the new so far. Their earlier works have always spoken to me in a deeply spiritual and healing way.

11.  What do you hope to say to people with your writing?

My goal is always to encourage. I like to write about real life situations, but to make the reader feel that no matter what he or she is going through, it’s going to be all right in the end. I’m not talking about living in la-la land, but just to give hope and uplift—to being some light in places of darkness. I also love knowing that I may be educating while entertaining. That’s always so much fun for me.

Spotlight on Author Megan Mottley

tour bannerMegan Mottley is the Founder and Creator of The Glamour Girl Movement. She spent several years working as a licensed esthetician and freelance makeup artist providing relaxation and rejuvenation services to women. Megan observed that women were putting more effort into enhancing their outer beauty and neglecting the most important aspect of True Glamour–inner beauty.  Megan launched The Glamour Girl Movement™ in January 2011 to encourage women to embrace beauty from the inside out.  Megan believes that when women take a deep look into their proverbial mirrors they are apt to discover their life purpose and can experience a life of freedom.

Thank you Megan Mottley for hanging out today. It is my pleasure to present your positive words and encouragement to women all across the country, surely we need more women like you! Now that we know a little bit about you, we’d like to ask some questions so let’s get right to it!

1.   What made you choose to write in the Genre that you write in?

I have a passion for helping women who have been knocked down by life. I wanted to write a self-help book that would show women how to bounce back no matter where they’ve been or what they’ve done.

2.  What is your favorite thing about the writing experience and why?

I love being able to take the experiences from my journey put it into words and inspire someone else through my writing to keep pressing on.

3.  What was the first moment you knew you wanted to write?

I knew I wanted to write in 1999 when my first article was published in a local magazine (GRACE). When I saw my name in print next to my words, it was a pivotal moment that made me realize that writing was a gift that I would never take for granted or let die. I was born to write and I thank God for entrusting me with such an amazing gift.

4.  When you write, do you write for a long period of time or do you write in short burst?

A little bit of both. I also publish a magazine and run a professional writing/editing firm so lately I have to commit to writing a few hours at a time so I can still reach my writing goals.

5.   Where did your inspiration for this book come from?

My daughter. After becoming a Single Mother life changed for me. I wasn’t necessarily happy about it either. I had to learn to look at my life from a different perspective–a positive perspective. Soon thereafter,I realized that my transparency was impacting other people in such a tremendous way and I discovered that my mess had become my message

6.  What words of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Go for it. Share your story and reach the person that you are assigned to. It’s your destiny so stop avoiding it. Grab and pen and start writing today.  In addition, invest in a professional photo session. Not only is it a celebration of your journey but when you’re requested for interviews you’ll have a professional look.

7.  If your book was turned into a movie who would you want to direct it?

Great question. Oprah Winfrey and Susan L. Taylor. Two ladies that I admire. I know they’d capture my story in such an amazing way.

8.  What is the best book you have ever read?

Don’t Miss Your Moment by Judy Jacobs. She autographed it and gave me a complimentary copy in 2009. That book changed my life. I truly thought that because of the choices that I had made that  I had missed my moment. Two years after that exchange, I had written and published my first book! Wow!

9.  What projects do you have planned for the future?

I’m planning a Glamour Girl Conference for mothers and daughters because I absolutely LOVE the bond that I have with my daughter. I want to create a platform for other mothers and daughters to strenghten the bond even during those challenging stages.

10.  What do you hope to say to people with your writing?

That it made them want get up, get out and do something. That it made them want to discover and begin to walk boldly in their purpose!

11.  Is there another hobby you have that you would like to share?

I love to bake and I’m developing quite a love for cooking and creating unique meals. I’m getting better and better at it.

12.  Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years I see myself taking The Glamour Girl Movement on the road. I see myself hosting Glamour Girl Conferences worldwide and speaking on local, national and global platforms to women and young ladies about the meaning of true Glamour and how we need to return to our thrones as Queens.

Read an excerpt from Glamour Girl

After bearing a child out of wedlock, I had totally lost all perspective for my purpose and God’s will for my life. Long after God had forgiven me and long after friends and family embraced me with words of encouragement and hope for the future, I still hadn’t found a way to forgive myself. A close uncle, who is also a minister, suggested that I take a sabbatical for a year to regain perspective of my relationship with God. He also instructed me to take time to build a solid foundation with my daughter.

A sabbatical is in a sense a form of fasting but in essence it’s time alone with God, critically reading scripture and being available for God to use you. During this time my heart and my mind were open to receive a profound message from God. I became fascinated with the Book of Esther and why she and several other women had to encounter 12 months of purification—a requirement of King Ahasuerus who was in search of a new queen. I thought that it was very fascinating that I was going through a 12-month process similar to that of Esther. I set out to discover exactly what Esther and the other women had to endure for an entire year and why. I also began to compare these biblical discoveries with modern day beauty treatments and the use of cosmetics.

I saw the need to bring the Book of Esther to life and to show women the purpose of God-Inspired Beauty Secrets. I also wanted to share with women what I discovered about God and myself during my yearlong sabbatical and how setting aside some time to be alone with God whether it is for one month, three months or 12 months can be a very invigorating experience. The purpose of my book is to encourage women to allow God to give them the ultimate makeover. The result is similar to those before and after pictures that are seen in magazines and on television; women will be amazed at the difference.

Spotlight on Author Charmaine Galloway

Charmaine was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. Writing has been her passion and a positive emotional outlet since middle school. As a teen, writing in her journal allowed her to escape the negativity of her world. Around that time she also began writing her first fiction novel. She finds joy in creating unique and awe inspiring story-lines for the characters in her stories. Ingenuity and imagination is a mainstay and compass in her work.

Charmaine has a Bachelor of Arts in Family Life Education and an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. She is currently working on her Masters Degree. Becoming a fierce advocate and supporter of troubled young women has been a goal of hers since overcoming struggles of her own as a young woman. “I believe turning a blind eye or deaf ear to our struggling youth only promotes destruction and demise. They are human. They have a voice. You’ll be surprised by what you learn from them if you just listen.”

Charmaine, being the wearer of many proverbial ‘hats’, is an independent self-publisher and the founder of Charming Gal Publications. She is the CEO and jewelry designer for Forever Divas Fashionable Jewelry, her online jewelry boutique and a Pre-Kindergarten Teacher. However, the most important ‘hat’ she wears is that of Mom to her two children. Following her dreams as a writer and authoress will leave a beautiful legacy for them and encourage them to work hard to achieve their dreams because their Mom didn’t quit reaching for hers.

Her debut poetry book is called My World, Through My Eyes: Poetic Reflections of Life, Self-Love, and Relationships, and her debut Urban Christian Fiction Novel called Girlfriends Secrets are both in stores now.

“As a new author I think it is very important that my readers get to know me. I’m a writer with Christian values and I hope to inspire people with the stories that I pen. My characters are everyday people going through struggles and obstacles because life is not perfect.

With every story I create there is a testimony that my characters will share about life and how they were transformed to become better people. Every story does not have a “happily ever after” ending and neither does real life.”

Thank you Charmaine Galloway for hanging out today. I’ve had the pleasure to network with you on social media outlets and I’m excited about your visit. Now that we know a little bit about you, we’d like to ask some questions so let’s get right to it!

  1. What made you choose to write in the Genre that you write in?

I write Christian Fiction and AA Fiction because I want to encourage others to live their lives to the fullest. In the stories I write my characters may hold secrets from others and they may be trying to get over their dark past. I write because I want whoever that reads my books to be inspired if they had a dark past they can still have a bright future. I write reality based stories adapt to Christian fiction, life is not perfect and neither are the characters in my books.

In our society today there is a need for more Christian Fiction writers. Please if you are a writer don’t be afraid to share the gift that God has given you. Your book just might be the story that others need to read that will encourage them to let go of their struggles and let God intervene in their lives.

2.  When you write, do you write for a long period of time or do you write in short burst?

When I write I usually don’t stop until I have written a full chapter.

3.  Where did your inspiration for Girlfriends Secrets come from?

I love watching the sitcom Girlfriends and I thought it would be fun to write about three women and the issues that they have and the secrets that they hold. But I wanted to adapt their story to Christian Fiction.

4.  What words of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

If you have a story to tell, then you write it. Being a self-published author is not an easy business, you need to have time to put in work to promote and get your books out to the public. But first you should do your research to make sure you are ready for this type of business.

5.  What is your favorite time of year?

Summer. I was born on the first day of summer.

6.  What projects do you have planned for the future?

I have a short story called Heaven’s Cry, it will be out in October. I have a novel called Golden that will be out in November. I have two children books coming out hopefully before Christmas.  The sequel to my debut novel will be out in March 2014.

7.  What do you hope to say to people with your writing?

I hope they my writing will inspire others to seek God and to know that He will heal you when you are sick, He is your strength when you are weak and He will be there to comfort you in your darkest hour, only if you trust and believe.

8.  Is there another hobby you have that you would like to share?

I enjoy designing jewelry for my online jewelry store.

Girlfriends Secrets

Alisha, Brittany and Tyra have been best friends since high school, sharing everything from clothes to their most intimate thoughts. But when the secrets they all kept pulled them farther and farther apart, the friendship that once meant so much to them took a backseat to pain, anguish and betrayal of the worst kind.

Tyra Bell is a single mother, who has had her share of heartbreaks and disappointments from the pathetic men in her past relationships. While becoming accustomed to her walk as a Christian, Tyra’s faith is shaken to its core when she receives devastating news.

Brittany Parker is the epitome of a “kept” woman. This self-centered house wife of a successful medical doctor lives her life under the premise that life (hers at least) is too perfect to have a care in the world. That is until she runs across someone who shatters the life she once thought to be so perfect.

Alisha Wright is a struggling mother of two. She would go to any measure to stay in a relationship with her son’s father which results in putting both her and her children in harm’s way.

These three women are each on a dangerous path that promises to destroy life as they know it and ultimately take each one of them out in the process.
