Sunday Sample – In Pursuit of You

Hey reading family! I hope your holidays have been great so far. We’re three days away from Christmas so surely you’re done shopping. Right?

I did all my shopping online from the same store so thankfully I was done last month. ๐Ÿ™‚

Today however, here’s a little sample of our upcoming release, In Pursuit of You. It is currently available for pre-order and will hit your kindles in TWO days!

Chapter One

Club Sangria

December 1st

โ€œAre you sure this looks okay?โ€ Avery asked.

Tina Braddon took an eye over her best friendโ€™s body-hugging knee-length turtleneck dress.

โ€œAre you kidding?โ€

Avery fidgeted with the hem of her garb. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t lie to me, would you?โ€

โ€œGirl, after I just stood in that long line in freezing temperatures with you, you think Iโ€™d lie?โ€ Tinaโ€™s cheeks rose as she squinted. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t we have VIP access if you were invited to this thing, anyway?โ€

Tina glanced around Club Sangria, already feeling the heat from the bodies gyrating inside as they sauntered deeper into the party.

โ€œBecause I told him I was busy.โ€

Tina placed her hands on her waist, then paused her stroll, halting Averyโ€™s progress as she leaned into a hip. โ€œWhyโ€™d you tell him that? Itโ€™s obvious you like him.โ€

โ€œHow is it obvious?โ€ Avery fidgeted with her turtleneck.

โ€œWould you stop doing that?โ€ Tina tugged Averyโ€™s fingers, and Avery dropped her hands and took in a deep breath. โ€œWhy are you so nervous? Iโ€™ve seen you stand in front of a crowd of thousands with a microphone in your hands having more poise than thisโ€”whatโ€™s going on?โ€

As the owner of WTZB Chicago news station, Avery Michele had found herself in positions most owners normally wouldnโ€™t. Because her station was still filling open positions for the last two yearsโ€”Avery occasionally found herself in front of the camera acting as a reporter, and behind the anchor desk as well. She was also engaged in meetings with top executives in ongoing efforts to expand the network.

As the sole heir to her grandfatherโ€™s legacy, sheโ€™d inherited the business upon his passing. Now, after five years as the stationโ€™s owner, Avery wanted to do what her grandfather always wantedโ€”to see WTZB flourish.

But even with her masterโ€™s degree in journalism and being the most extroverted person in the room on most occasions, Avery couldnโ€™t shake the butterflies that fluttered in spirited animation, knowing the man she spent restless nights dreaming about was near.

Bringing her focus back to Tinaโ€™s squinting leer, Avery sighed.

โ€œI just want to make sure I look my best. Iโ€ฆโ€ She cleared her throat. โ€œFor some reason, spending time with this man makes me feelโ€ฆโ€ She pursed her lips and moved her eyes around the gallery of partygoers.

โ€œMakes you feelโ€ฆโ€ Tina leaned in, her shoulder-length hair brushing her shoulders as if to rush Avery to her conclusion.

โ€œLike, I want to get to know him better. In a way that I could possibly learn toโ€ฆlove him.โ€ Tinaโ€™s eyes lurched, and Avery was hasty with her follow-up explanation. โ€œIโ€™m not saying I love him becauseโ€ฆโ€ she stuttered, โ€œGod, I donโ€™t. I mean. I donโ€™t know him well enough to, you know.โ€ She linked her hands to give them a place to rest because of the nerves that bounced through her entire body.

โ€œSee, thatโ€™s what I meant when I said itโ€™s obvious you like him. The few times Iโ€™ve seen you guys in the same room you get all doe-eyed and you stop listening to me.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, I stop listening to you?

โ€œYou canโ€™t focus on anything but him. And vice versa. Yโ€™all are cute together, by the way.โ€

โ€œBut we are not together. Weโ€™re just friends.โ€

โ€œHow many times have I heard that before?โ€

Avery frowned and cocked her head to the side. โ€œI havenโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œI mean, in your lifetime. Most of the time, when a woman is hiding the true nature of her relationship, she hides it behind the guise of โ€˜just friends.โ€™ Which is total bullshit, by the way.โ€

The DJ came through the speakers. โ€œCome on in, beautiful ladies. And fellas, make sure you keep our guests comfortable tonight. We want to have a great time as we celebrate the collaboration of Valentine Innova-Corp and NASA.โ€

The crowd cheered, with patrons throwing their hands up and some shouting in merriment.

โ€œCongratulations, DeAndre Valentine.โ€ The DJ pointed toward the railing that wrapped around the inside of the third floor, and all eyes traveled to find DeAndre Valentine move to the edge of the clearing, a broad smile brightening his handsome, bearded face. โ€œWeโ€™re here to party with you all night, brother. Much love and respect for your growing business endeavors!โ€

The crowd cheered again as DeAndre tilted his head and held up a hand in salute.

โ€œI think itโ€™s time that you make yourself known,โ€ Tina said.

Avery nodded. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ She turned to leave, but Tinaโ€™s resting palm on her shoulder gave her pause.

โ€œI think I just saw Malik Anthony Clark,โ€ Tina said. โ€œSooo Iโ€™mma head to the dance floor.โ€

She was no longer looking in Averyโ€™s direction as she was all but zeroed in on Malikโ€™s supremely rich chocolate skin. Malik and his brothers Derek James Clark, Tristian Neil Clark, and Langston Jamal Clark were the infamous Clarks of Northshire Bendโ€”a high-class African-American family who were famous for their philanthropy efforts.

โ€œSo, knowing Iโ€™m nervous, youโ€™re going to leave me?โ€

Tina turned back to Avery. โ€œYou wonโ€™t want me there once you get caught up in his attention. Youโ€™ll probably forget Iโ€™m there. But hey, look on the bright side, Iโ€™m still in the club, and if ever thereโ€™s a moment you need me, text me. My phone is on vibrate, so itโ€™ll make my titties jiggle.

Avery laughed out loud, letting her head fall back.

Tina nodded, knowing her jokes would calm Avery.

โ€œFeel better?โ€ Tina asked.

โ€œYou did that on purpose, didnโ€™t you?โ€ Avery squinted, and her face reflected her happiness.

โ€œYou know how I do. Wouldnโ€™t be much of a friend if I didnโ€™t try to attempt to calm you and send you off with confidence.โ€

โ€œOr maybe you just want to get me out of your hair so you can go take Malik from that girl heโ€™s dancing with.โ€

โ€œThat, too.โ€

Avery laughed as Tina spun around and sashayed to the dance floor. She couldnโ€™tโ€”and wouldnโ€™tโ€”blame her friend, but still, as she watched her tap Malik on his shoulder and lured him to her with the collar of his shirt, Avery snapped out of her nervousnessโ€”instead, drawing on Tinaโ€™s confidence, she headed to the staircase that led to the third floor.

Meandering around people coming down, then shaking one guy off who decided to grab her to get her attention, Avery continued up her path to get to him.

At the rope that separated the club from the VIP, she stood behind five other women who were trying to impress the security guard with their looks in order to gain entrance into the area. He gave them the attention they were looking for, smiling, and winking while he admired their racy looks. But still, he sent them away after finding their names werenโ€™t on the list.

Avery bit down on her lip. She shouldโ€™ve never told DeAndre she wasnโ€™t coming. The thought of being turned away like the other women gave her pause.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name, pretty lady?โ€

Averyโ€™s brows rose. โ€œHuh?โ€ She snapped from her thoughts to look at the guard. โ€œOh, um, Iโ€™m probably not on that list, either.โ€ He gave her a look that said too bad. โ€œBut Mr. Valentine and I are close friends, so if you let him know Iโ€™m here, Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll let me in.โ€

โ€œUnfortunately, miss, I canโ€™t leave my post.โ€

He saw her eyes dim.

โ€œOkay, then, donโ€™t worry about it. Iโ€™ll catch Mr. Valentine when he comes out.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you give me your name, and we can check to see if youโ€™re on the list.โ€

She started to decline. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

He shrugged. โ€œIt canโ€™t hurt. Youโ€™re either on the list, or youโ€™re not.โ€

She smiled. โ€œAvery Michele.โ€

The guard lifted an iPad and scrolled through the list of names.

โ€œAvery Michele,โ€ he said with a smile. โ€œYouโ€™re on the list.โ€

Averyโ€™s eyes lit up, and the guard winked, then removed the rope and stepped to the side.

โ€œWow, okay, thank you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not my business, and usually I donโ€™t get in otherโ€™s business, but I feel the need to tell you to just chill. Be yourself. I can tell this is your first time at one of Mr. Valentineโ€™s parties. Heโ€™s a pretty upstanding guy. No need to be worried or unsure of yourself.โ€

โ€œDamn,โ€ Avery said, โ€œAm I that transparent?โ€

The guard smiled. โ€œYeah. But remember my advice, and youโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œEnjoy your night.โ€

โ€œYou, too.โ€

Avery turned to take an eye over the interior of the VIP room. It was decorated with maroon and navy blue furniture, accent chairs, plush sofas, and drapery to match. A never-ending bar wrapped the length of the wall, disappearing into another room that Avery couldnโ€™t see.

But she didnโ€™t need to because when her eyes landed on a muscular, stocky build, accentuated behind a white button-down that stretched over intricate biceps, her belly clenched at the same time her heart jigged behind her breasts.

He was talking in a circle of family and friends, people Avery recognized instantly.

Brothersโ€”Hunter, Xavier, Lance, Raphael, and Kyle Valentine. Beautifully designed men in chocolate skin that spanned them from head to toe. Goatees, beards, freshly cut and groomed, their personal styles perpetuated by the taste of their unique swagger.

DeAndreโ€™s mouth spread into a broad smile, and a burly guffaw drummed into the air, making Averyโ€™s ovaries shift with excitement.

Then it happened. DeAndre scanned the room, his gaze landing on her quietly watching him from the entrance. His highlighted smile eased to a subtle grin, his lids dipping as his lustful eyes traveled over her form.

Stepping out of the circle, DeAndre made no mention to the others about his departure, only strolled on the strength of his iron masculinity in her direction.

โ€œAvery Micheleโ€ฆโ€ his thick voice stroked. โ€œWhat a beautiful surprise.โ€

A tiny smile made her cheeks rise into a blush.

โ€œHello,โ€ he responded, his gaze a dark twinkle of excitement.

โ€œI was surprised to find my name on the list.โ€

โ€œWell, I knew you didnโ€™t think I was coming, soโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYeah, but I wouldnโ€™t miss an opportunity to get you next to me should you change your mind.โ€ His gaze traveled her again. โ€œLike now.โ€

Averyโ€™s cheeks burned with heat. โ€œIf I had known that, we wouldnโ€™t have stood in that line outside so longโ€ฆโ€ she chuckled, trying to make some of those butterflies settle down by being comical.

DeAndreโ€™s brows dipped. โ€œSweetheart. You will always be on the list now.โ€

She shook off a shiver, and DeAndre stepped closer, his arm sliding around her waist to pull her into the heat of his aura.

โ€œYouโ€™re cold,โ€ he surmised.

โ€œIโ€™m thawing now.โ€

They chuckled, and he nodded. โ€œGood.โ€

The music changed, and โ€œTonightโ€ by Summer Walker replaced the previous upbeat tempo.

โ€œDo you dance, Ms. Michele?โ€

โ€œOnly if you call me Avery.โ€

His ginger-and-coffee brown skin was highlighted by the appreciation in his lifting mouth.

โ€œYou have a gorgeous smile,โ€ she added.

DeAndreโ€™s mouth dropped slightly, and he chuckled. โ€œGirl, donโ€™t be stealing my lines.โ€

Avery laughed, and he enjoyed her merriment, clearing his throat in an attempt to calm the stirring in his gut.

โ€œNah, Iโ€™m kidding, Avery.โ€

They stepped into a grinding dance. Avery accepting his pull as her arms slid up his chest to wrap around the thick column of his throat. Heat trapped them in a blanket of warmth, and the spicy scent of his cologne tingled her nose.

โ€œSo tell me, Avery, what made you change your mind about attending tonightโ€™s gathering?โ€

Her lashes fluttered. โ€œI wanted to celebrate you.โ€ She shrugged. โ€œTonightโ€™s the best time for that. So, here I am.โ€

โ€œYou mean you wanted to celebrate with me?โ€

Her smile was flattering. โ€œNo, I meant celebrate you. Itโ€™s not every day a handsome, educated, successful black man snags a deal with NASA. You should be celebrated.โ€

DeAndre eased out of her space, taking a step back and twirling before reentering her space to reclaim her body once again.

Avery laughed as her body tingled all over at his shenanigans, ignited by his wide-spreading smile, grinding hips, heated touch, and penetrating gaze.

โ€œSo you think you can call me handsome, and I wouldnโ€™t notice it?โ€

Avery held on to a closed-mouth smirk before responding. โ€œWhat I said is the truth. Iโ€™m not telling you anything youโ€™re probably not used to hearing.โ€

โ€œOn the contrary. The same words spoken still make a difference when experienced with such a coiling warmth of animation, sweetheart.โ€

Averyโ€™s heart sprang in an upbeat of invigoration.

โ€œSame,โ€ she managed to whisper.

Somehow, without any effort of their own, their bodies compressed as if melting into one another, charging their loins with potency neither of them could dismiss. DeAndre lost his reserve for a second, slipping masculine fingers into her hair and drawing her mouth so close their breaths bounced between their lips.

Static charged their center, and his dick grew up her belly where it pressed into her navel, formidable, and unwavering.

โ€œOhโ€ฆโ€ She blinked as a gasp left her mouth, and her eyes widened.

DeAndre snapped out of his lustful haze just then, alarmed and taking a full step back.

He cursed. โ€œAvery, I apologize, Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUh, no!โ€ She reached out to him, clasping his forearm to stop his retreat. โ€œYouโ€™re okay. I promise.โ€ Her smile calmed him, and he dropped his head a bit and smirked.

โ€œCome back,โ€ she said, tugging on him.

DeAndre reclaimed her eye, then glanced around before settling back on her.

โ€œWalk with me.โ€He slipped his hand into hers and led Avery to the bar.

A Game-Changing Christmas

Whew! Let me just start with that. It is with great pleasure, blood, sweat, and tears that I bring you this crossover edition of the Falling for a Rose and In the Heart of a Valentine holiday edition!

I have gotten so much feedback about the two families and your love for them both and your desire to see them patch things up that I have lost count. However, I knew trying to create a story like this would be a challenge. Let’s face it, both of these family’s are pretty big, and besides that, the rivalry isn’t something that can just easily go away with a ‘let’s get over it’ attitude.

Nah, the history of this feud runs a little thick, so finding a common solution won’t be easy, if at all. Writing this novella kept my emotions running high, and let me tell you why. We’re catching up with the couples you’ve read about in the Falling for a Rose series, and vice versa for In the Heart of a Valentine. Add a common enemy, a brewing love affair, surrounded by a whole bunch of sexiness and wa-la! Here we are.

I’d like to be clear about the brewing love affair. It is not a Rose and Valentine hookup. The Rose’s are all accounted for. If you’ve read Give Me A Reason, book three in the Valentine series then you’ve met Bri St. James and Raphael Valentine. While their story comes in January, you’ll get an inside look at their brewing romance in this holiday edition, and I hope you love it!

Oh, by the way, if you’d like to pre-order, A Game-Changing Chrismas is available now on Amazon.

Are you up to date on the Falling for a Rose and In the Heart of a Valentine series?

No Holds Barred an excerpt

Benjaminโ€™s Breakfast Hut

โ€œGood morning,โ€ a hostess chimed as she entered.

โ€œGood morning,โ€ Camilla replied. She glanced around the bistro, noting the bustling activity. โ€œIt seems you have a full house.โ€

The hostess looked around as if she hadnโ€™t notice.

โ€œI have a special spot just for you,โ€ the hostess sang.

Camilla perked. โ€œIโ€™m following,โ€ she sang back.

The hostess put on a bright smile. โ€œRight this way.โ€ She turned with a sharp twist and meandered easily through the restaurant.

A few busboys passed them as they headed for a table to the far right of the eatery. โ€œExcuse me,โ€ one said as he scurried around Camilla, wiping a hand on the neatly folded apron tied around his waist.

โ€œHowโ€™s this,โ€ the hostess said, stopping at a small table.

โ€œYou did have the perfect spot,โ€ Camilla said, staring out the window to the hustling Chicagoans who strolled through the downtown streets. โ€œNice and tidy, too,โ€ she continued taking a seat at the short table.

โ€œYeah, weโ€™re always crowded this early. Are you new to The Regency?โ€

Camilla smiled. โ€œYes, I am.โ€

The hostessโ€™ eyes popped. โ€œIn that case, let me be one of the first to welcome you to Benjaminโ€™s Breakfast Hut. Iโ€™m Alicia, itโ€™s nice to meet you.โ€

โ€œCamilla,โ€ Camilla said, offering her a handshake.

โ€œThatโ€™s a pretty name,โ€ Alicia beamed.

โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œCamilla, your server will be with you in just a second.โ€

โ€œThank you again,โ€ Camilla responded. She set her briefcase down and pulled out her cell phone. Camilla could sit for thirty minutes before she made her way to work. The beauty of being on the staff at WTZB was that it was within walking distance of The Regency, which was another plus when Camilla decided to rent a space in the luxury towers. It had only cost her a small fortune to lease the mini penthouse suite, but it was well worth the security and convenience.

She strolled through her missed calls. Two of them were from her friend Corinne Thomas whom Camilla had worked with for five of her seven years at News 12 before Corinne left the studio to become a stewardess. Camilla was also supposed to call Corinne for safe check-in as well, but sheโ€™d yet to do so. The other five missed calls were from Stephen her ex-boyfriend, the last person Camilla wanted to talk to.

After being engaged to Stephen for three years, Stephen suddenly decided marriage wasnโ€™t for him. He called it off the minute Camilla began bridal shopping. Six months later, Stephen was back, begging for a chance to show Camilla heโ€™d changed. For three months, Camilla let him fester and beg like the dog he was, but she eventually took him back. Another two years of her life later and Stephen was doing it again, calling off the wedding. Camilla had had enough, letting Stephen know there would never be another chance for them. That was eight months ago, and now he was back again, ringing up her phone, probably wondering why there was a for sale sign in her yard.

Camilla skipped right over his number and hit send on Corinneโ€™s. โ€œPonyโ€ by Ginuwine cruised through the receiver, and Camilla frowned.

โ€œI was just getting ready to put an ABP out on you,โ€ Corinne answered.

โ€œBefore we can move any further with this conversation, I need to know why Ginuwine is singing to me when Iโ€™m calling you. Is that seriously one of those ringback tones?โ€

Corinne cleared her throat. โ€œOh, so you didnโ€™t have Missy Elliot singing when someone called you?โ€

Camillaโ€™s lips thinned out. โ€œYeah, like ten years ago.โ€

Camilla laughed in whispered tones. โ€œWhat happens when your boss calls and โ€˜Ponyโ€™ plays in his ear?โ€ Camilla continued to laugh.

โ€œI like how you just flipped this whole conversation around to me,โ€ Corinne said. โ€œI suppose youโ€™re safe.โ€ Corinneโ€™s voice was stern, and Camilla knew sheโ€™d upset her.

โ€œAww, okay, Iโ€™m sorry. Thereโ€™s nothing wrong with your ring back tone,โ€ Camilla lied. She dropped her head in her hand and shook it slightly. โ€œIโ€™m okay. Thank you for calling to check on me.โ€

โ€œI told you I would, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œYeah, you did. And I wish we couldโ€™ve come up on the weekend together.โ€

โ€œOoh, that wouldโ€™ve been nice. Then I could get all up in your Chicago business.โ€

Camilla chuckled. โ€œI donโ€™t have any Chicago business. Yet, anywayโ€”โ€

โ€œExcuse meโ€ฆโ€

The timbre of his voice not only sent a shrill of heat cascading over Camillaโ€™s body, but it also caught her by surprise and threw her off balance. Bringing her eyes up to the mystery man himself, Camillaโ€™s heart skipped a beat as her sight took in the magnificence of his stature. Black suit pants laced around his powerful thighs and what Camilla knew was probably a taut ass. A leather Christian Dior belt buckle aligned through the loopholes of his pants, holding a pristine shine.

The maroon long sleeve button-down shirt stretched up the barrier of his grandiose wall of muscle and waved slightly over the pecs in his chest. With his collar flipped down and the first two buttons undone, his unblemished coffee brown skin was displayed. Camilla swallowed so hard she couldโ€™ve ingested her tongue. Her heart binged in her chest, and Camilla had a hard time trying to recover.

As if the palpitations werenโ€™t bad enough, Camillaโ€™s gaze locked with her mystery man, and immediately, she felt pulled toward him. With piercing dark brown eyes, he held her stare just as his tongue cruised across his lips to wet his mouth.

โ€œI donโ€™t mean to interrupt you, but, thereโ€™s nowhere else to sit while I have my breakfast, so I was hoping youโ€™d have mercy on me and allow me to dine with you.โ€

โ€œCorinne,โ€ Camilla said, speaking into the phone, โ€œIโ€™m going to call you back.โ€
