The rise of a new day

Warm arms, strong and muscular wrapped Jada in a shell. Her heart skipped a beat, and she turned, slowly facing a rugged goatee. Her eyes ran up his lips, so succulent and tempting, over a strong nose, into dark brown eyesโ€”a glimmer of hazel sparkling in the depth of his gaze.

โ€œYouโ€™re… awake,โ€ she announced.

His arms pulled her tight.

โ€œI am,โ€ he responded, his unblinking stare, piercing.

โ€œI know that look and before you ask, can I brush my teeth first?โ€

If she admitted to herself that being this close to him was causing absolute wreckage on her spirit, maybe he would grant her request a little faster.

โ€œPlease?โ€

He eyed her a second longer, considered denying her request because this was typical Jada. She wanted to hide from him, and there was so much that needed to be said.

โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

โ€œI know, and we will,โ€ she moved to slip out of his arms, and he released her, with frustration in a sigh that dispersed on his lips.

Running into the sanctuary of his master bathroom, Jada shut the door without bothering to lock it, knowing Solomon wouldnโ€™t interrupt whatever quiet moment was needed. He was so considering. Always on the lookout for others and making sure at every moment that Jada was good or possessed what she needed.

Not only that, but their friendship, from the moment they met in grade school, grew, as their fondness for one another developed. Their similarities became more apparent, and they exercised those commonalities daily. Like adding martial arts to their regular exercise regimen or watching dark rom-com movies like A Thin Line Between Love and Hate. It was their all-time favorite. Theyโ€™d hit the streets for any political front-runner they believed in and even had the pleasure of being partners on daytime game shows like Family Feud.

But most importantly, Jada and Solomon had been able to do with one another, something that theyโ€™d yet to accomplish with anyone else. They recognized each otherโ€™s differences and understood that those distinctions played a vital role in their individual character. Whether it was Jadaโ€™s need to unplug every appliance or electronic in the house because she swore the energy used from them while they were off was money that could be saved, to Solomon walking out of the room and leaving the lightโ€™s on because he would return shortly or that it slipped his mind.

Regardless of which, instead of demanding the other get with the program, they individually worked on their own accord to bring ease to the otherโ€™s anxiety by being mindful of those instances.

It was everything she needed in a mate. He was everything she needed.

That thought made Jada shake her head and push off the door and make her way over cold Italian marble tile to the glass shower door. She reached for the nozzle and checked the temperature of the water as her thoughts rewound to yesterday, then last night.

Marcus.

Jada had the hard evidence to prove that heโ€™d been cheating on her. As she added the camera to the stuffed animal heโ€™d purchased for her birthday the day before, second thoughts had riddled Jadaโ€™s mind. But she needed to know. More importantly, she was desperate to find out if her assumptions were just that.

But they hadnโ€™t been. And the raw, ugly truth made Jada lift her hand to her chest and massage a thumb between her breasts as if to console the pain that rested there.

It was time to leave him once and for all. But that wasnโ€™t the biggest issue of yesterday.

She kissed her best friend and remembered it as if she was sober and full of sound mind when sheโ€™d lifted into his mouth.

Excuses taunted her.

You were drunk. You needed consoling. You wanted to feel loved again.

And even after all of those half-truths floated around her mind, Jada shed her clothes and stepped into the downpour of crushing water, knowing, it was something else altogether.

โ€œWhat is happening?โ€ She murmured, exhaling while entertaining risky possibilities.

Book Title: Ivy: Some Say She’s Poison
Author: Deidra D.S. Green
Genre: African American Erotica
Release Date: December 9, 2016
Hosted by: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Goodreads

book blurb

Ivy is a master teacher and her lovers are students of her game. Their wills she bends to fulfill her own lustful desires and they enjoy every blissful minute of it, until she dismisses them, one after the other, until there is only oneโ€ฆ well, maybe twoโ€ฆ one has never been enough for her. Taken from the pages of โ€œWoman at the Top of the Stairsโ€ comes the candid tale of Ivy; a woman cut from the same cloth as the father she idolizes. And just like her father, Ivy is a rolling stone, never stopping, never settling. She has left many a lover in her wake, wounded but wanting more. Ivy is poison to some but a pleasurable antidote to others. Dare to take a taste for yourself and see if sheโ€™s really poison.

excerpt

“Brock grunted loudly as he exploded inside Ivy; his hot gism coated her throbbing clit. Parker squealed in ecstasy as she too reached her climax, riding the wave of Ivyโ€™s magical touch. And just like wounded soldiers, the two collapsed to the bed on either side of the one they loved. Ivy allowed them to languish for just a minute; each holding on to her as if she were their anchor. She then exited the bed and made her way to the shower.

No further words were necessary. Each knew what was expected. They had both been there before; whether singularly or plurally. Parker and Brock gathered their belongings and left the 6,000-square foot, luxury apartment. There was no exiting salutation between the two of them, just a slight smile as they went their separate ways. They would see Ivy again, but only when she wanted to see them. Most likely either or both of them would receive a text. A time would be given, nothing more. They would come running without hesitation. Itโ€™s who she was and what she wanted. They accepted without question. Ivy had that kind of effect on people.”

Spotlight on Author Lashanta Charles

spotlight Lashanta Charles

LaShanta Charles was born and raised in the small town of Orangeburg, SC. She has always been an avid reader of all genres, but Urban / African American Fiction has always been her true love and is what inspired her to pursue a writing career. In high school, she began letting her classmates read the short stories that she would write and based off of their feedback, her passion for writing pushed her to become a published author. She published her debut novel, Lovely Lies, in 2013 and released the sequel, Lovely Lies 2, in February 2014. Currently she is preparing to release her third novel, Splitting Karma, along with other projects. In recognition of her work, LaShanta was named National Black Book Festivalโ€™s 2013 Best New Author and was nominated for 2013 Breakout Author of the Year through the African American Literary Awards Show. Lovely Lies was also awarded Most Underrated Book of 2013 for the Literary Scream Awards.

Welcome to Love Is A Drug, Ink LaShanta, it is so nice to meet you and get familiar with your work! ย Now that we’ve got your attention for a minute let’s get right into it!

1. Where do you get the inspiration to write?

ย I draw inspiration from just about anything, literally. For example, I just saw someone eating an apple โ€“ my current heroine will undoubtedly love snacking on peeled apples. Iโ€™m inspired by my surroundings, which are constantly changing, therefore I change as well.

2. When did you start writing, and was there a significant event that prompted you to do so?

ย I started writing while in high school, around the age of 15. I remember writing a โ€œstoryโ€ that literally never ended. I would pass it along to my classmates and friends for them to read and they would be enthralled and begging for more. I like to think that was my first following! Iโ€™ve had a beautiful relationship with writing since then.

ย 3. What do you enjoy the most about writing?

ย I enjoy creation! I love when that tiny spark of embers becomes a full blown raging inferno of 80,000+ words. I love the struggle of developing complex characters. I love filling in blanks within my plots, answering questions enough to give you that โ€œahaโ€ moment, but not so much I give you every single detail and leave nothing to wonder. I love seeing a finished product, a work that I put my heart and soul into, knowing that someone somewhere will either love it or hate it and Iโ€™ll be fine either way.

ย 4. What was the hardest part about writing your book?

ย The hardest part was editing. I wanted to make so many changes (I actually made quite a few); even after my book went to the editor I was still making more changes! Then to receive it back from the editor with critique and suggestions, it was like someone was deciding my newborn baby could only have blue eyes and not brown. It was by far the worst part of it all.

5. What do you like to do when you are not writing? What is your ultimate luxury?

Iโ€™m super lazy, so anything that requires physical effort is a no-no! I love to read and I love to eat; and I love to do it all at home alone โ€“ no kids, no husband, just me, my food and my books. This can also be applied to different settings such as a beach, an airplane, etc.

6. Tell us something funny about yourself that not a lot of people know about?

Hmm, I sometimes eat a spoonful of flourโ€ฆcanโ€™t believe Iโ€™m sharing this! Iโ€™m pretty sure thereโ€™s some logical explanation for it and I should probably mention it to my doctor, but nope, Iโ€™m good.

7. Is there anything else youโ€™d like to share with our readers?

I love interacting with readers, so feel free to contact me and let me know how youโ€™re doing or whatโ€™s going on with you!

splitting karma

Taylor Williams didnโ€™t grow up with the loving parents, white picket fence, and a dog. Sheโ€™s struggled to get where she is and knows that with all sheโ€™s endured, life can only get better. At 28 years old, she hails as one of the countryโ€™s top divorce lawyers and is ready to slow down and start a family with her husband. The only problem is he shuts her out and has treated her like everything but a wife since the night he came across her and his boss in a compromising situation. In spite of her innocence, sheโ€™s determined to make it up to him.

Isaac Warren is bad business; the kind of bad business that requires focus and determination in order to stay alive. Itโ€™s also the kind that caused him to shut himself off from serious relationships after the brutal murder of his fiancรฉ three years ago. Now his cold exterior keeps him at bay from everyone except those he considers family and right now that list doesnโ€™t have room for anything more than the occasional tryst and nothing more, especially not with the highly acclaimed lawyer heโ€™s accidentally stumbled upon.

Did you miss my interview?

Recently I was a guest on The Q-Spot with Michelle Big Body Cuttino on her blog talk radio channel. It was her one year anniversary and she has reached over 12,000 listeners which is a huge accomplishment. During my stay she asked me about the NanoWriMo challenge I won in November 2013. For you who don’t know NanoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It’s a huge fiasco where thousands of writers all over the world get together to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. It was a big task and I’ve recently done this challenge before and failed but this time I was prepared. With my outline in hand I was able to hit the goal of 50,000 words a few days before deadline and it felt good!

We also chatted about my current and upcoming releases. If you didn’t know ‘Wreckless’ is available on Amazon. It’s $1.99 and a part of my Lunch Break series. I go into more detail about the Lunch Break series doing the interview so be sure to check it out.

The Q-Spot One Year Anniversay featuring Me

With the weather being as crazy as it’s been lately It’s good to curl up with a good book. Especially a series. To leave this world and go into the lives of others and experience that kind of escape is good to me. I love reading always have and always will. I just recently finished reading ‘Secret Obsession’ by award winning author Kimberla Lawson Roby. It was nicely done and now I’m reading a book by Nikki Turner. I don’t often read street literature but when I do, it’s Nikki Turner. I like how she throws the love mix in there, if you know me you know I’m a sucker for love. Look out people coming up is my next release also ย a part of the Lunch Break series titled; ‘Broken’ all of my books can be found on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Kobo, and Smashwords. What was the last book you read let me know, I’m always looking for my next good read!

Spotlight on Author Rhonda McKnight

Rhonda McKnight is the author of the Black Expressions Top 20 bestseller, A Womanโ€™s Revenge (Mar 2013), What Kind of Fool (Feb 2012), An Inconvenient Friend (Aug 2010), Secrets and Lies (Dec 2009) and Breaking All the Rules (Oct 2013). She was a 2010 nominee for the African-American Literary Award in the categories of Best Christian Fiction Novel and Best Anthology. She was the winner of the 2010 Emma Award for Favorite Debut Author and the 2009 Shades of Romance Award for Best Christian Fiction Novel. Originally from a small, coastal town in New Jersey, sheโ€™s called Atlanta, Georgia home for fifteen years.

Hello Rhonda, thank you for joining us today for this interview. We are always on the lookout for romance novels here at Love Is A Drug, Ink. Now that we have your attention for a little while we have a few questions to ask you so let’s get right to it!

1. ย  What made you choose to write in the Genre that you write in?

Iโ€™ve been writing since I was a teenager, but I didn’t even know Christian Fiction existed until 1998 when Victoria Christopher Murray introduced me to her novel, Temptation. That was when I started to think about the kind of stories I wanted to tell. But even then I wasn’t sure I was the right person to tell a โ€œChristianโ€ story. As I’ve grown spiritually, I’ve realized that itโ€™s really the only kind I can tell. I write who I am.

My latest release, Breaking All The Rules, is an inspirational romance.ย  When I began writing, it was because I had fallen in love with the then, BET, now Harlequin Kimani/Arabesque line of African-American novels, so while my novels have been pretty serious Christian Fiction stories, my love for โ€œboy meets girl and they fall in loveโ€ type romance has shown up in both my novella length fiction.

2. ย  What is your favorite thing about the writing experience and why?

My favorite thing about the writing experience is reader feedback. Readers are fantastic. They fall in love with the characters and that connection to my work is exciting and encouraging.

3. ย  How do you handle bad reviews?

Iโ€™ve had great reviews with just a few bad ones here and there. When I see the bad ones, I shrug. Every book isn’t for every reader and some people are really emotional readers who canโ€™t see the book ending any other way than the way they had it mapped out in their head. Thereโ€™s nothing you can do about that.

4. ย  Where is your favorite place to write?

Any place where my kids and the dog aren’t. I can be found at the local Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts tapping away on my keyboard.ย  One day Iโ€™ll rent a cabin in the woods or a house on the beach and fail marvelously at getting any work done. Iโ€™m sure the scenery would pull me away from my work.

5. ย  When you write, do you write for a long period of time or do you write in short burst?

I do both. I work full-time and Iโ€™m a mommy, so I write when I can and when I must because of a deadline.ย  I typically start a project and write for weeks or months for long hours on the weekend and late into the night until itโ€™s done, but then I wonโ€™t write again for several months.

6. ย  Where did your inspiration for this book come from?

ย Facebook chatter. One day I was scrolling through my newsfeed and found a long discussion about what I call โ€œthe Ex-Factorโ€ (the original title for the novel). People were so passionate about it that I thought, โ€œSurely, this will make a good book.โ€ I decided to give Deniece the career of a wedding planner simply because I was watching the movie, the Wedding Planner one night and thought that career would give the book the perfect twist.ย  I also love, love, love David Tuteraโ€™s show, My Fair Wedding.

7. ย  What is your favorite author and why?

My favorite author is actually deceased. The late, great BeBe Moore Campbell. She was a master at description and character development. She also did a amazing job at weaving several plots bringing them together nicely by the end of the book. I miss her work.

8. ย  What words of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Read, write and then read and write some more. Study the craft of writing. Buy craft books or take writing classes. Attend a writerโ€™s conference. Youโ€™ll learn so much about writing and the publishing business.

9. ย  Who is your favorite character in your book and why?

My favorite character is the hero, Ethan Wright. Heโ€™s yummy. Handsome, rich, generous and did I say handsome?

10 ย What is your favorite scene from the book or why?

My favorite scene from the novel is the black moment; you know when you think the lovers might be finished. Deniece puts up a great fight. Sheโ€™s angry and stubborn to the point of silliness (kind of like we women get) and then she finds out she was wrong about the hero. I love it when couples make up.

11. ย If your book was turned into a movie who would you want to direct it?

Malcolm Lee and not because my character is Deniece Malcolm. Jย  He directed The Best Man and itโ€™s one of my favorite movies.

12. ย What is the best book you have ever read?

Your Blues Ainโ€™t Like Mine by BeBe Moore Campbell. Riveting, beautifully written story based on the Emmitt Till story.ย  I read it nearly twenty years ago and it still remains my favorite novel of all time.

13. ย What projects do you have planned for the future?

Iโ€™m writing quite a bit. Iโ€™m working on a sequel to my third novel, What Kind of Fool, which was the sequel to my second novel, An Inconvenient Friend. My readers love the character, Samaria Jacobs. Sheโ€™s a messy, homewrecker whoโ€™s trying hard to get her life together, but her ratchet ways keep getting in the way.ย  Iโ€™m also releasing another romance novella next month, just in time forย  Valentineโ€™s Day in an anthology with a few other authors. Iโ€™m writing a lot.

14. ย What do you hope to say to people with your writing?

My books all have the theme of forgiveness.ย  I believe the stories resonate differently with each individual, but if I had to name one thing, I’d say Iโ€™d like readers to understand that forgiveness is a decision. Once a person decides that peace is more important than bitterness and pain, they will have a fuller, more complete life. Forgiveness is not about the other person. Itโ€™s about you.

15. ย Is there another hobby you have that you would like to share?

Everything in my world seems to be about child rearing and writing these days, but I do have a garden and I enjoy that immensely. It a great way to work through stress and get some organic veggies for my family.

16. ย Where do you see yourself in five years?

Is buying an island on that television show โ€œIsland Huntersโ€ too ambitious? I prayย  Iโ€™m retired from my job and happily creating stories for my readers.

17. ย Do you have an official website?

ย www.rhondamcknight.net

18. ย Where can we find you on social media?

ย I love social media. Iโ€™m on Facebook everyday at www.facebook.com/booksbyrhonda and in my Reader Group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/rhondamcknight/

Iโ€™m also on Twitter @rhondamcknight and Iโ€™m addicted to Pinterest. I have a great Pinterest page for the novel, Breaking All The Rules. Please check it out. http://www.pinterest.com/rhondamcknight1/breaking-all-the-rules/
